season 6 episode 1 Valkyrie....
FBI Agent Rachel McCord, and Kates new DC partner. Way too officious for my liking, not at all friendly.

Storylines of: Kate in DC; Rick as PI (both involved professional separation);

Loksat - the drug cartel re S8
The suggestion by Rick's stepmother to Kate to separate from Rick to protect Rick from the cartel;
Return of rogue Detective, Slaughter in ep s8 Cool Boys.
As prior mentioned, hayley and vikram, unnecessary characters, especially since they took Lanie away most of season.
The GDS (Greatest Deective Society, of which Mason Wood is Director, and as it emerged in series finale, was also behind Loksat.
The wrecking of canon ie 6.23, that Kate been married in a forgotten marriage;
The trashing of s4 treasured ep, To Love and Die in LA, via The GDS in which Rick Alexis and hayley went to LA (and Kate didn't).

Syd - just curious as to why Kelly Niemann appears on your least favorite character list? I loved how she was focussed on Kate as soon as she met her and completely ignored Rick. She was also the kind of villain that was extremely annoying because you had to bring an A game to try and catch her out and you could say that the team failed to do that. Kate survived her nothing more.

B :-) I don't like villains, and 'especially' female ones. (I used to work with a nasty woman who did her utmost to get me fired. I was at that job for 6 1/2 years, she left in the 4th year I was there. The woman left an enduring impression on me. It also left me shocked at how nasty some women (tv characters as well), can be.
Kelly Niemann was an intensely creepy villain and extremely jealous of how smart Kate was. Kelly Niemann was outraged that she couldn't get under Kate's skin no matter how hard she tried. The female version of 3XK. Kelly Niemann would neve be satisfied until she 'beat' Kate, hence her shock in Reckoning when Kate finally freed herself and eventually managed to kill Niemann. This was a story yes, but there are real life people who behave like it and have no fear.

DETRACTING - NEGATIVE IMPACT
DICK COONAN
We learnt via Sucker Punch, that a murder victims brother, is also the man who was the hired hitman who actually murdered Johanna Beckett. He at first comes across as a smarmy friendly brother of a victim, till his words dont add up. He does eventually admit that he knows, or knows of, the killer of his brother, and he wants to help the police.
Lanie tells Kate that the same weapon that killed the victim, also killed Kates mothere, lawyer, Johanna Beckett, shocking and numbing Kate.
Kate organises a sting, funded by Rick, and the team realises that something is very wrong. Again in interrogation Dick Coonan accidentally calls another victim a woman, and its not till after the sting, that Kate realises that Dick Coonan is the man who not only killed his own brother, a painter, but also the hitman who murdered her mother.
Kate goes to arrest Dick Coonam who is still at the Precinct, and tells what she realised. Dick Coonan, then takes Rick hostage, and Captain Montgomery tries to shoot him, but Kate wants him alive. In the end, Kate shoots Dick herself, and he dies.
DETRACTING - NEGATIVE IMPACT; DICK COONAN WAS A CONTRACT HIRED KILLER, WHO MURDERED JOHANNA BECKETT, THEN HE TOOK RICK HOSTAGE AT THE PRECINCT, (BEFORE KATE KILLS HIM).
ALL THAT WAS NEEDED NOW WAS TO LEARN WHO HIRED THE KILLING AND WHY. THAT WASNT DISCOVERED TILL LATER, AND THE PERSON ARRESTED BY KATE.

MEREDITH CASTLE
AKA MOTHER OF ALEXIS AND RICKS FIRST WIFE.
She is introduced in Season 1 ep 6 Always Buy Retain, as a flighty, wanna be actress, who dosnt have much talent, but she dosnt realise it. She also took custody of Rick's credit card during the divorce, and uses it all the time. Meredith is flakier than Rick is, and as Rick pointed out to Alexis in Season 2 ep Nanny McDead, both Meredith and he decided that Rick was the least flakiest and the more responsible one of the two of them, re taking care of toddler Alexis, so when Meredith left to persue acting possibilities when Alexis was 3, Rick became her main parent.
Meredith returned in Season 5 re Rick and Kate being a couple, just so she could check out their suitability, and also to grille/have dinner, with Kate re her feelings for Rick.

VULCAN SIMMONS DRUG LORD
INTRODUCED IN S3 KNOCKDOWN, AS DRUG LORD and hated lawyer Johanna Beckett for her efforts/campaign in trying to eradicate the streets of Manhatton, of drugs and drug dealers. In interrogation, Vulcan insults Johanna to kate and and she roughs him up before being stopped.
HE NEXT APPEARS IN S6 EP IN THE BELLY OF THE BEAST, in which Kate asked to go undercover, finds her alias a drug courier, and she re sees Vulcan but under te guise of the drug courier. When Vulcan realises who she truly is, he decides to have her killed, and so waterboards her in icy water. She dosnt die and is rescued by the actual drug courier.
VULCAN'S FINAL APPEARANCE IS ALSO HIS LAST; VERITAS. He is later found murdered, shot several times, and this is after Kate goes rogue again and follows her snipers brother, but also finds Vulcan. Kate is implicated in his murder, as well as Jason Marks, brother of her sniper, Cedric.

DAMIAN WESTLAKE (AKA RICKS BEST COLLEGE FRIEND AND PAPER EDITOR) SEASON 3 THE FINAL NAIL
Damians wife is found murdered by nail gun. Damian is under suspicion and a suspect. This causes friction and a fight between Kate and Rick, and Kate tells Rick to go home. This is also where Ryan famously says that 'Mum and Dad are fighting'
During the investigation, it emerges that Damians father died while Damian was in college. Rick dosnt believe that Damian killed his father either.
However, Kate and the boys prove without a doubt that Damian arranged for and paid for a fellow college friend to kill his father. Damian was charged. Rick apologised for not listening.
The final scene is Kate and Rick walking out of Damians house, to the song 'I Would Go Anywhere With You'
NB. This ep was The Final Nail, and was the Valentines Day ep. The idea of the last scene being that Kate and Rick ended up spending after hours of Valentines Day together after all, so after Damian caused Caskett to fight, it ended better.
NEGATIVE IMPACT; DAMIAN WESTLAKE BEING A SUSPECT IN HIS WIFE'S MURDER, THEN BEING CHARGED WITH ORGANISING THE HIT ON HIS FATHER DURING COLLEGE YEARS; BUT BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERING THOUGHTS/OPINIONS OF KATE AND RICK RE DAMIAN, CASKETT HAD A FIGHT AND KATE TOLD RICK TO GO HOME.

ROGUE DETECTIVE ETHAN SLAUGHTER
Friend of Ricks. Obnoxious and disrespectful to Kate. We are first introduced to him in Season 3,and he returns in Season 8. Slaughter is rogue as he dosnt follow rules of any kind, which also includes manipulating and abusing. He also bullies and manipulates Rick. Slaughter used to be a cop before being booted out. Now a private investigator.

SOPHIA TURNER - CIA - Season 4 Pandora/Linchpin.
Another of Ricks former muses. She kidnapped Rick and Kate and took them blindfolded to the inner echelons (belly of) the CIA. We all learnt that she actually was a Russian spy, which shocked Rick. Sophia told Kate that Rick liked her, that she, Sophia, could tell. Sophia is killed. Before she could get a fellow operative to kill the Chinese Finance Ministers little daughter. The little daughter being the linchpin. The death of the daughter would have brought about a world war. The daughter aged between 7-10.
Trivia: Sophia Turner played by Jennifer Beals.

KRISTINA KOTERRA
CLOUDY WITH A TOUCH OF MURDER;
Kristina was the Entertainment Reporter who fancied Rick and who made a play for him. Albeit Kate told Rick that in public they were both single . . . . ., but even when Rick tried to rebuff Kristina, she never took the hint. She was a maneater, woman on a mission. Kate via jealousy visited Rick when Kristina was putting her moves on him, and Kate saw the evidence. It was meant to be funny? but I didnt think it was.
Because of amorous Kristina Koterra, Kate made new rules. They can say they are both single in public, but dont actually date others.

3XK
Serial killer who hated Rick because 3xk knew how intelligent Rick was and read him like a book. 3xk liked to believe he had superior intelligence and would never be caught, yet Rick figured him out quickly. 3xk kept coming after Rick to prove 3xk was more superior. He wasnt.

FBI , AG OFFICE, AGENT RACHEL MCCORD
Since Kate joined the AG office and being partnered with Agent Rachel McCord, Rachel wasnt particularly friendly towards Rick, also because he wasnt making his first impressions good ones. Rachel didnt like Rick and his interference with the case at hand. Things came to a head, and in Need to Know, in last scene, Rachel fired Kate, under orders from the AG boss.
While watching the Need to Know ep, I found Rachel to be too officious and not very friendly in general. she made her presence felt during Need to Know, in which she and Kate joined the 12th Precinct in the case, but she wanted their help, but would not divulge her own info to them, thus earning Captain Gates dislike and words to the effect of 'Im the Boss here, Not you' (paraphrasing), to which Agent Rachel McCord didnt like very much.

SENATOR WILLIAM BRACKEN
The corrupt Senator who has (had) dreams of being the President. He organised the hit on Kates mother, Civil Attorney, Johanna Beckett, because she wanted to shut down the drugs on the streets of Manhattan.
We first meet him personally in Season 5 premier/opening ep, After the Storm. Kate strikes a new deal enforcing her safety.
He also appears in ep Recoil, then later on in Season 7 Veritas, in which is one of (if not THE best ep of the season), in which he via henchmen, tries to kill Kate again, but is rescued by Rick.
In another thriller scene, she sensationally finally arrests him at his press conference, shocking him as he assumed she was dead. It is arguably THE best scene of the episode. Kate places him in handcuffs and charges him with fraud, conspiracy to murder, and the murder of her mother. He is marched outside the court., and Espo puts him in the police car.

SEASON 8
DEFINATELY NEGATIVE IMPACT;
VIKRAM the computer analyst. He was totally unnecessary, and unwanted, and he kept on interrupting Casketts couple times/romantic times, in a very annoying fashion/manner. In fact he began in the first ep.

ALEXIS IN SEASON 8
She became a total pain in the behind in Season 8. Went from a uni graduate to a know it all computer geek, and also a super sleuth. what on earth happened to her wanting to be another Medical officer?? she also changed from being a sweet teenager in season 5 to a teen putting her father through the ringer re her obnoxious and questionable boyfriend of Pi of Season 6 or 7, to a virtual 18 going on 25 year old in s8.

MARTHA IN SEASON 6
furthered her scatty and theatre/actress lifestyle by being even more intrusive once Rick and Kate were engaged, and it continued into Season 7, and parts of 8.
Who could forget the antics of when Kate was fired from the AG? First Pi walked in on Caskett while they lay in bed, then Martha walked in on them, followed by Alexis. Martha would quite often interupt Casketts romantic moments. Plus there was also infamous Clear and Present Danger of Season 7. . . . Martha walking in on them by walking into the elaborate pots and pans that Rick set up to ensure their alone time.
Sure Martha was meant to be comedy relief too, but sometimes/quite often it bordered on ridiculous. The deep and meaningful moments were better.

CALEB BROWN DEFENCE LAWYER, ALSO LOKSAT RIGHT HAND MAN Season 8.
Caleb was introduced early in Season 8 as a defence lawyer for Rick for when he was a witness to the murder of his college friend.
We also learned that Caleb was also 2IC/Right Hand Man to Loksat, and in the shows last ep, he shot Rick, then Kate, but Kate was also able to kill Caleb dead. Caleb conned them all, but Kate started asking questions as well, so she became suspicious.
Kate and Rick recovered for Kate to become pregnant and give birth to three healthy chidren, which was shown in final 30 secs of the show, and set 7 years in the future. Lily, 7, was the image of her mother, and identical twin boys, Reece and Jake, named for their adoptive uncles. The twins celebrated their 3rd birthday.

Syd, I could never dislike Senator Bracken because Jack Coleman was soo good at playing him. Like the best villains he wasn't black and white in what he did. To him, his reasons for his crimes made sense, "the end justifies the means". And unless it's because Stana could act with a piece of wood and make the object seem good, the chemistry between Jack & Stana was as good, for me at least, as the best days with Nathan.

And unless it's because Stana could act with a piece of wood and make the object seem good, the chemistry between Jack & Stana was as good, for me at least, as the best days with Nathan. B :-) i suppose it all depends on point of view, and a value system. It also depends on what exactly the 'end' is and what the 'means' is and what the justification is. Bracken deliberately chose bad over good. He didnt think anything of organising hits on his enemies, or those who were against him in his endeavours. He was a deranged psychopath who also was a con man, who only cared about his image, and hopefully being elected to President. In ep Veritas, he organised two other evil men to kill Kate. That didnt happen. He wanted only four things in life; to be President; to organise hits on anyone who got it in his way, to not be stopped, to charm and con anyone he met to get what he wanted. Granted Jack Coleman played the role well, I still didnt like the character. Also granted, he played the role with much emotion, animation,ferocity, and evil intent, with no regard for life just getting his own way, and yes Jack Coleman played the role with relish opposite Stana as Kate. Interestingly, Rob Bowman I think directed Veritas. I will have to check up on the other eps. Many thanks for your thoughts KB. Much appreciated.
