I have been able to watch the movie. I am extremely impressed with the final product, especially since I read the two main autobiographies on Vera Atkins.
The film starts off with Virginia being marched alongside guards into a room with a barrel, in which she is waterboarded. It ended up being part of her training. Then the film continues with showing how Vera, Virginia and Noor were introduced to the call to spy. All were introduced via newspaper adds. It also shows Virginia on her way to work.
Vera has tried to become a naturalised Englishwoman, but is rejected because of her birth. Virginia applied to be a diplomat, but she is rejected because of her disability ie her wooden leg. Vera is now working for Special Operations Executive, and she interviews Virginia and Noor. (For interest; Sarah Meghan Thomas is lefthanded).
The spy training takes around 3 months. ie army style, then trained for learning Morse Code, then taught how to kill a Nazi if confronted. Vera gives the girls tablets for pain and also a cyanide tablet for suicide. Remark is 'better to die by suicide than by the Nazi's' (paraphrasing). They are also given their code names.
The action is fast paced, top locations, language a mix of wartime and now, brilliant direction. While watching the movie I felt like the autobiographies I had read had come alive.
Interesting or because of? the films original title 'Liberte' being taken out of the title, the script made up for it in two profound ways; both by te same person; Noor admired a bird brooch that Vera wore, and Vera gifted her with it. After Vera pinned it to Noor, Noor said/exclaimed/stated 'Liberte!'.
the film showed Noor operating the Morse Code machine that was built into a suitcase, it also showed Virignia getting around stealthily. Plus Vera was SOE's boss, Buckmasters secretry, but she was also the 2IC. There was a scene where Vera told him she wanted to be naturalised, so he arranged for it to happen, and she then got the army uniform too. The reason women were asked to become spies because it was explained, that no-one would expect women to be spies., and with Virginia, no one would expect a woman with a prosthetic leg to become a spy, which is why she did; and with Noor being half Muslem, no one would expect a woman Indian Muslem to become a spy.
Noor was eventually captured, and tortured. At the end of the film, she was executed, and before her death, she said 'Liberte!'. Very profound. I think people will be surprised by how sudden her death (murder) was. It is/was the last scene of the movie.
Eventually, Virginia became part of the CIA.
In the credits, I was surprised to read that while the film is historically true some scenes/events wernt true. I found that hard to believe as to me the film seemed accurate to the books Ive read. (Ive also photocopied relevant portions of the books Ive read, including the b/w pics contained within., and the front and rear covers).
Kudo's to Sarah Meghan Thomas for having the sheer determination to get the movie made; kudo's for her script/screenplay, kudos to her, Radhika and of course Stana for their portrayal of these real life historical figures.
I urge everyone to try and see this brilliant movie, and also learn some historical history re the Special Operations Executive, and the secret spies that Prime Minister Winston Churchill instigated and set up., and more importantly learn of the work and lives of Virginia Hall, Vera Atkins and Noor Inayat Khan. Noor was the youngest female spy to die.
I give this film 10 stars. But in this film/tv rating system; 5 stars.
For anyone who hasnt also seen the vintage film, Odette, please do if the opportunity presents itself. Odette was part of the SOE. Ive seen the film 3 times. Odette was married to Peter Churchill (no relation to Winston). He was also part of the SOE. Both were also captured by the Nazi's as portrayed in Odette. I think Anna Neagle plays Odette, and Trevor Howard is Peter.
So there is now 3 films; Odette, The Darkest Hour (Winston Churchill movie), and now A Call to Spy.

Sarah Meghan Thomas interview. Excellent. Also great to hear her talk about her roles as actress, screenwriter, and producer, and how it was filmed. She deserves to win many awards and accolades for this movie. It is outstanding. This interview runs for just over 6 minutes. She actually reminds me a bit of Stana in how she talks with the film critic. t.co/RY58PKO9HN?amp=1
