This is officially the Best review I have read thus far. Oh, how I Love the 2nd par (there are 8 of them) . . . .'This is the compelling premise of 'A Call to Spy', a mature character -driven historical drama that examines yet another Shamefully Untold True Story from (caps are mine) World War 2. It may be a tad too ambitious (???), when it comes to scope, but for a small budget indie, its a Remarkable Accomplishment. Mpre importantly, the film never loses sight of its characters, their individual plights, and their dedication to service. Not only are their stories informative and inspirational, but theyre rich with lessons still relevant today. Better yet, this is a Female Led movie that Shines on Both sides of the camera. Take note Hollywood' . . . . . . Take Note Hollywood indeed!!!. (Latter par;) . . . . 'Vera Atkins is Brilliantly played by Stana Katic' . . . . .. Last par; '.....An Eye Opening True Story of Uncommon Valor, told through Capable Direction, a Smart Affecting script, and Three Central Performances that Vividly Portray these heroes. And their heroism wasnt just reserved for the arena of war; These women Fought Uphill, showing their True Mettle, in the Face of Hardship' . . . . 4.5 stars.

Three of my fave parts of the tweets is Stana saying it was an honour to portray Vera Atkins, that Vera was a role model, and that Vera and the female spies helped turn the tide of WW2.

Reviews are coming out right now. Google Stana and sort by time 24 hours, news.
Not having seen the movie I shouldn’t critique the reviews, but I will. If you’re going to criticize a film, novel, tv series based on history and real people doing real espionage then you better rely on the work of John Le Carre. There is little tension in WWII/Cold War spying. Lots of listening and watching. There was lots of patriotIsm and talk of sacrifice. Not so much Bond. Not that many car chases. It’s chess, not Jamangi. Several current critics need to do more homework.
Anyway, from the reviews I get that the film sticks fairly close to the history and the people who made it. That sounds good to me.

The “in print” review appears in today’s NYT with a small picture of each of the three stars. Always good to get a review in the NYT. .

www.reviews.filmintuition.com/2020/10/ACallToSpy.htmlwww.showbizjunkies.com/movies/movies-reviews/review-a-call-to-spy/...."Stana Katic delivers the best performance in the film as Vera Atkins, the woman in charge of recruiting the female agents and then becoming their 'den mother' - double checking their outfits and papers for missions, acting as liasion with their families, and staying long hours in the decoding room waiting for word from them. Katic portrays Atkins as a strong and highly capable woman who's not only confident about Hall and Khan's abilities but also protective. Katic's also terrific at portraying Atkin's concerns, over her own private struggle to become a British citizen (she's Romanian by birth) while dealing with a guarded and distrustful government. She steals every scene she's in. ...."

Very well done film. I knew much of the history previously through helping a friend with a novel based on Noor. There isn’t any romance only commitment and sacrifice. Lots of George Smiley no Bond. Historically it’s spot on. Difficult to expect suspense when you know what comes next.
I thought that the dialogue was correct for the time and the events. The writing is on a par with the best writing Stana had in Castle. As a story the film is very much a how done it. In many ways it’s like Hidden Figures or The Martian. The action moves along smartly and coherently. Better all round than the film of Sister Cities.
Acting is good, as good a crew as in Absentia. But, Stana just stands out among this good cast. Not only does she stand above everyone else in her scenes, but the quality of her work carries through the movie. She had me looking forward to her next appearance. She has about as much screen time as anyone. She does top notch work. All in all she takes the lead any holds it with substantial skill and talent. A real pleasure to watch a master at work. They dress her very well, too.

Very good movie, by far (in my opinion) the best one Stana has starred in (including Sister Cities). As a fan of World War II spy novels, I found it less John le Carre and more Alan Furst - well-assured, historically accurate, more concerned with people than the sweep of history, but occasionally a little dry. Like Furst, it's about how ordinary people can do extraordinary things in times of crisis (which is why I love the best of Furst); even though sometimes those extraordinary things don't seem to lead to spectacular successes (and are even forgotten or are abject failures), they are part of the fabric of something truly great. The spies who went to France were true heroes at a time when the world needed some.
I was going to congratulate Linus Roache for his excellent English accent as Buckmaster, until I looked him up and found out that he is English! Turns out that I should have been congratulating him for years for a convincing New York accent on Law and Order!

The likeness/pose is stunning ie how much Stana looks like Vera Atkins. Stana was born to portray fictional Detective Kate Beckett, FBI Agent Emily Byrne, and now real life heroine, Vera Atkins.
