This sounds awful. Not only is the older man/younger woman, 20 year plus difference, so old hat, especially in the post-Weinstein HW, I really thought they'd stay away from an on-the-job relationship as being much too much like Castle. It looks to me as though Fillion's guest arc on Modern Family was a trial run. Will be interesting to see if there's any audience for this kind of show.

Tone deaf just doesn't cover it. If the comments on TVLine were any indication of the fans response to this story writing then they have already pushed themselves into a very negative space. Agree with Quasar that it would appear that the guest star role Nathan had in MF was perhaps a trial run for this pairing? Seriously, both his character and in RL, NF is old enough to be this future love interests father! Just no people. But it is Hawley, so enough said.

I have to agree, this seems unbelievably tone-deaf in the world we (and they) are living in. It would have been so easy to cast someone for this role for a position like an ADA - potential overlap professionally, but a person who is established, confident, experienced at what they do, and actually age-appropriate. Of course, that presumes that the entire premise is even interesting, which (to me, anyway) it isn't. Fillion was never the reason I watched Castle anyway, and the description we're hearing about this show certainly isn't encouraging me to watch it for other reasons.

NF has already proven on Castle that he can't be a romantic lead. Flirting short term perhaps, if he deems it necessary in his eyes, but give me a break! After I saw him "romantic" on Castle, I just labelled him as a silly slapstick "actor" who couldn't act in love. Every time I think of that awful proposal I cringe. And I agree with the age gap difference. Just really glad they didn't cast MQ for the girlfriend role!!! Since the show's storyline seems so far fetched, I'll pass. Will be interested in how it fares.

They didn't like the one on Castle. This female is easy to kill off. They can have a new one every other episode or so. That said, there is a lot of down side for this show. Hawley is not a good stroyteller. Considering that season 8 of Castle was more or less a colaboration of Fillion and Hawley, I have no idea why ABC is doing this. But, any show can be canceled at any time. Statements to the contrary mean nothing in Hollywood. Fillion had better be in the best shape of his life to handle this show, even with a few dozen stunt guys. Fillion also better play this cop as a smart tough adult rather than the simpering screamer boy he turned Castle into.

Had not considered how expendable the female character could be.

Fillion and Hawley -- and ABC? -- seem convinced they were on the right track in Castle season 8 to diminish and get rid of a female lead who was more than equal to him and her role more than equal to his character. What you describe -- an age-appropriate, established, confident woman -- might be easy to conceive of and cast, but would be too much of a challenge for him off and on screen.

Yes, the actor doing the female lead will be a challenge for Fillion and Hawley. She'll always be compared to Katic as Beckett. If she's as good, Fillion won't be able to cope. They'll cut back her role or just kill her off NCIS style only quicker. If she's not, the show will suck, because Fillion just isn't as good without a substantial actor opposite him.
It does not sound like something to run a full season.

Well, if you look at the roles Nathan has either had created (MF) or been chosen for, he has been typecast as the middle aged sleaze guy who hits on woman half his age. That whole character meme is incredibly wrong at any time but gosh is it wrong now in HW IMO. Tone deaf and any wonder the ABC is in trouble-is Dungey's job in peril and the guy above her?

I recall something about him not wanting Kate and Rick to get together and arguing with Marlowe about it. If that's true, and we know it's so for Nathan, it may mean that once Nathan gained more influence and power with TPTB as the show entered the final couple of seasons, he was able to finagle Hawley's return as Castle showrunner for S8. They appear to have been on the same side early on, what's not to say they were on the same side later on as well as now.

fillion and Hawley believe that they can do as they please, and don't care whether its the right thing or not, or offensive or not. I hope the 'romantic' partner or whatever is half as good as Stana is. fillion wont be able to handle it, and will insist on the characters death. I also hope the show gets cancelled by its 5th ep.
fillion and hawley again??? No Way!!! Shame on abc for agreeing to this new show.!!!

Does anyone remember TV Line's first announcement about Hayley Shipton's character? They were still looking for an actress, but the character should be hispanic or african-american in their late 20s: "TVLine has learned that the stalwart procedural is casting the role of Hayley, a quick-witted, free-spirited former LAPD cop who now works as a security specialist and is not afraid to cross lines to get things done .... Specifically, Castle is eying African-American or Hispanic actresses in their late 20s to play the part" As Castle liked to say: "There are no coincidences" source

NF seems to be so full of himself that he must think it doesn't apply to him.

Veritas - Thanks for the new thread, it will be interesting to see how popular this series will be and whether it will be better than these initial suggestions of what it will be about.
Curious to know what you guys think. It is usual for a series that starts shooting in March not to have its main cast yet? Or have I missed the article that says who the co-stars are going to be? And could that also indicate that the script is not yet complete for the first season? And for those of you who put forward the possibility of simply killing off the romantic female lead, no, just no in my book. At least not if Nathan & Alexi are going for a repeat of the final season of Castle. You know, that "humor"...
NYer - I think your idea of an ADA as his love interest would have been a much better idea. The conflict that might arise from their situation but then that relationship would surely be compared to Castle & Beckett.
For me, Nathan has proved he can be good at drama. I think of the "four years" speech to Kate, his reaction when Alexis went missing and the way he dealt with 3XK.
B :-)

The show may/probably will get derided because of the age diff, and be too close to fillions character and girlfriend on Modern Family.

Interesting ^^ Not just director but exec producer as well. Good move by Friedlander as she'll have a say over the script. Note also that they're calling it a drama in the headline and "light drama" in the article. I think they're already reshaping this baby to something a bit more palatable to the Me Too and Times Up generation.

Quasar, just letting you know I have edited my post above after reading more on Liz's professional background. First blush, I had thought they were putting up a female Director to quell some of the negative noise over that casting call. But it would appear that Liz has worked for Gordon Productions on another project that received very poor reviews and ended badly-as did Hawley.

LOL Latte, you know how to edit to put in more bite! Thanks for the heads up. I noticed the Gordon and ABC connections, but didn't take it any further other than to think that's why she came to mind. I think they're doing exactly what you originally thought - quelling the negative noise - but they're doing it in typical Hawley/Fillion/ABC mode, by trying to kill two birds with one stone and the stone comes from their own pile.

Funny how he didnât want to be involved with Stana, Hawley either. Now itâs ok.. just proves Fillion had issues with Stana. See if this 25 year old enjoys kissing a lead that kisses the chins of his leading women.

I guess the Latina angle has been abandoned. Interesting trivia tidbit that once again his leading lady will be of Canadian origin.
