Well, if Nathan learned anything from Castle, this actress won’t be very good. Anything to make him look better. He doesn’t want his new woman co-lead to steal the show and have fans adore her.
Wonder if they are making his last name “Rookie”. If not, he can’t say this is “his” show.

When I heard that Nathan Fillion was coming out with "The ROOKIE" on ABC, I thought, 1) "This proves that ABC backed Nathan Fillion over Stana in the all the post Castle talk" 2) "With Alex Winter involved, this shows that Stana wasn't as beloved by the Castle staff as it was claimed, and Nathan wasn't the problem on set." 3) "I really hope that this is not Castle Pt 2".

Using the LAPD the show can drop or change the female actors with easy. Transfers, training, temporary duty elsewhere are all logical story lines that will remove a particular woman from the show. Lucy is not nearly as important to the story line as Beckett was.

Interesting views everyone. I do wonder if this actress will bring fans of Dark Matter with her which I believe was her series before The Rookie.
EOF - I think that Nathan's character is John Nolan..?

IMO,Fillion has learned nothing. I will watch first episode. Are all Asian-American-Canadian women called Lucy in their TV rolls.?

That's impossible, KB1L40, they are not competent enough to replace Kate Beckett. Good luck to them, they will need it with this storyline.

Actually the revelations of the past few months have shown that abusive men in the entertainment industry have been backed by the powers that be (networks, agencies, production companies and even the police) over the people they abuse - and that when women complain about the abuse they have suffered they and the people supporting them get fired and tagged as 'difficult' and 'the problem on set". It's only in the last few months that there has been any sort of public reckoning about the behaviour of abusive men on sets or behind the scenes. And TPTB have given abusive men multiple opportunities to continue abusing - and will continue covering up for abusive men as long as they possibly can. (Abuse can take many forms and have varying levels of seriousness, of course.) So - as the last few months have demonstrated - ABC supporting Nathan does not mean he was not the problem on set.

I guess the Latina angle has been abandoned. Interesting trivia tidbit that once again his leading lady will be of Canadian origin. Also same age as Stana at the start of Castle. But tiny in comparison at 5'4"...and she can't wear high heels on the job. They'll be a little Mutt and Jeff going on.

The media already brings it up constantly and will again when - if - the show ever airs in any way resembling the early descriptions.

Personally, I hope "The Rookie" has a lot of Castleesque(sp?) qualities because there has not been a show that is like that on network/cable TV since. The fact that early scripts were so strong that ABC decided to skip the pilot and go right to series order should tell people a lot. Also, with Nathan's broad commercial appeal, the show should be successful.

Its not that uncommon for series to go straight into production and frankly ABC needs to pull out some stops as many of its series are not exactly hitting the highs for viewers, part of the general malaise of network TV I'm sure but not helpful when share holders come calling....I have no doubt that we will see some Castle moves in the new show, why wouldn't the common producers/writers try to copy some from what was, for the first 5/6 seasons, the best show on TV.

A bit surprising. Surprised that Fillion, as "star," would take any sort of backseat to anyone in the cast. On the other hands, maybe he has no choice because 1) the role is less demanding timewise or 2) he's not up to it physically or 3) it's all he can get. I wonder how long Nathan will go just being a banana in the bunch? Experience tells us that he will not let anyone else outshine him for long. I don't doubt that ABC needs a new hit, but even a straight to series PR statement can be drastically wrong if ratings don't come through.

Allowing some no-name actors to actually develop some star-power is exactly what he does. He did it on Firefly, he did it on Castle, and he will do it again on The Rookie. The good news with the Rookie is that being EP, he is now able to keep the craziness BTS that hurt Castle from happening again.

Also, with Nathan's broad commercial appeal, the show should be successful. Actually there were NO scripts when ABC picked it up. That was stated in the original announcement. There's at least one script now if we can believe the reviewer who wrote about it. To me the fact that that ABC went ahead with just a pitch or treatment indicates the network had some sort of agreement with Fillion or Hawley left over from the Castle debacle, something on the order of an option on a project one or the other or together developed. After all Fillion had been signed for S9 so such a clause would not be unusual. ABC and Fillion go back a long way, almost like the studio system in the golden age of movies, so again it's no surprise they'd want to keep him in their stable. As far as Nathan's "broad commercial appeal," I don't know just how broad it is beyond the scifi crowd. Probably enough to get a decent audience size for the premiere of the show but week in, week out? Up in the air. The show itself will have to be good enough to keep and build an audience beyond his fans, just as the case is with any actor and show. The show itself has already gotten some bad press and internet comments. I believe they will have to be very careful of how they represent Nolan's attitude toward women and how they portray the female roles to avoid more backlash.

I thought that too at first but now I'm wondering what the effect of having Take Two on the same network at the same time will do to that possible plan. Take Two is the obvious Castle-like show. Will ABC want two copycatting Castle???

The fact that early scripts were so strong that ABC decided to skip the pilot and go right to series order should tell people a lot. Also, with Nathan's broad commercial appeal, the show should be successful. Actually there were no scripts submitted to the ABC-confirmed by management media statements. As for emulating anything of the success/qualities of Castle-good luck on that front. Why? Because the chemistry between Katic and Fillion was an extremely rare phenomenon rather than one that can be bought and manufactured again. Final point, Nathan may have some commercial appeal but to describe it as 'broad' in a HW context is IMO pushing the envelope. Where was that broad commercial appeal when he desperately needed it for 'many years to come' on Castle? As the Castle seasons went by and the emphasis increasingly had separate storylines that increased sans Caskett scenes, the show's ratings deteriorated. The more viewers saw Nathan Fillion on screen without Stana Katic, the more they voted with their remotes. Hawley is already a three time loser show runner. Fillion has had one success story and that was due to his partnership with his female lead. Not exactly a winning combination. Perhaps it will be successful, goodness knows the ABC will pour money into it to try and make it so. But, it has already started where Hawley left off on Castle-sexist writing and fans calling him on it.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can replace Kate Beckett. Good news for you, Castle has been canceled. So, no one is replacing Kate Beckett. It was never good news for this fan, that Castle was cancelled. But the show that made it an iconic television product was no more in the later seasons and particularly S8. To even seriously entertain the idea of continuing without the character of Kate Beckett, demonstrated both commercial suicide and total disconnect from many of the loyal Castle viewers. Collectively those that both enabled and advocated that direction, were revealed for who they were. As for Kate Beckett, the character will continue to be a comparison point for future female characters for years to come. Not sure that will be the case for the character of Rick Castle. Now that's telling us something maybe?

Exactly - the direct to series order says a lot more about ABC than it does about the show, since as you said they actually had precisely zero information about the quality of show at the time. This was clearly, and only, about Fillion having a lead role in a show on ABC. Whether that's because they love him, or because it was part of the deal he signed for season 9 if Castle was cancelled (which seems much more likely to me), it says absolutely nothing about what the quality of this show will be.
