Think the only reason Nathan has worked so much with the ABC is due to the contract he has had with them over the years. What is interesting is that no other cast from Castle have been given the same contract options it would appear? Didn't the male lead from Bones go straight into a new show at the end of that series? Bones was on Fox, while SEAL Team is on CBS, so I don't see any connection between them. On the other hand, it seems pretty clear that ABC Studios is a fan of Fillion. Agreed, and they have been that way from the beginning. Nathan is a Brand that ABC/Disney has stood behind and has continually invested in since Castle. He works the public appearances and talk-show circuit like a champ; and brings in the eye-balls when he does guest-spots.

My comment stems from the fact I followed the ABC show LOST and watched an interview with Evangeline Lilly at the time the show was winding down, and she commented about ABC wanting to work with her and others in the cast on new projects after LOST finished. Lilly, her co-lead Mathew Fox, and Josh Holloway have never chosen to work for ABC again, but at least 7 other members of the cast have on different shows. My point is I don’t think this is the only show ABC has done this with but unless an actor starts working for them again we don’t know who was asked or who was interested. With Castle being a smaller cast and the show being the Castle and Beckett show, I’m not surprised it appears that ABC was mostly interested in Nathan and according to the Deadline article, Stana. I’ll also add I’m not surprised Stana isn’t working with ABC. I loved the cast of Lost and thought that more of them were going to have bigger careers than they did, but sometime stars are not as bright as we think they are.

Yeah, but that was a very average show. Good actors can unfortunately get tied into bad shows. It happens all the time. They jump in with both feet believing its going to be great, and they hype all that they can with their brand...and then the worst happens. Mediocrity. Average. Blah. The "Leave It' as opposed to the "Take It". When you are a star, GREAT is what you are shooting for.

Yes, the vehicle was not good, that’s my point, it had nothing to do with the brightness of an actor.

Latte - I like the picture that you posted of Nathan on March 14th but then looking at it for some reason I don't like it. Can't explain. Wrigleycity - "It's good to see the King back in his rightful place." Sorry but just because Nathan and the 'boys' dressed up as Elvis does not make Nathan 'The King!' And I see that Nathan will be playing his favorite character ever - again - in American Housewives? B :-)

He is the King because ABC says he says. Look at all they have done to put him back on the air since the untimely demise of Castle.

"“There is a darkness in you. In all of us, probably. Beasts we keep chained. Ordinary men have to keep the chains strong, for if we let the beast loose then society will turn upon us with fiery vengeance. Kings though...well, who is there to turn upon them? So the chains are made of straw. It is the curse of kings, Helikaon, that they can become monsters. And they invariably do.” - David Gemmell

There's a joke in there about King and servant or master and slave, depending on the version, but that's all I can say here. Sorry. Let me just say, who's the King?

Wrigleycity - thanks for the reply but I don't know enough about ABC to answer why you believe Nathan is King of that network. Nathan is perhaps in your eyes but it was, I believe, when people referred to Elvis that he was actually called/known as the King of Rock n Roll.
B :-)

I should have clarified this back when I posted this. When I saw that first pix of Nathan filming The Rookie, my first though was...the King was back in his Castle. Also, the King of Rock N Roll is Elvis and the King of Pop is Michael Jackson. Hope that clears it up.

He looks thinner to me in his face. It makes him look diffident. I won’t be watching.

He's definitely thinner in the face, and looks a lot like Charlie Sheen to me, particularly in the shape of the face.

Sorry, Wrigley City. There's nothing awesome about that brief teaser, nor anything reminiscent of Castle. Nothing witty in the dialogue and Nathan's straining to deliver his line with some suggestion of relevance and realism. Unfortunately, they've already made the mistake of telling rather than showing the importance of being a cop is to him, something Castle didn't do with Beckett.

Fillion's strength is comedy. He is a good dramatic actor, but his comedic skills far out weigh his dramatic. In the past he has been too earnest in dramatic endeavors, a touch on the soap opera side. His best dramatic work was with Stana when Castle is trying to explain himself to or fighting with Beckett.
From what I know the Rookie is much more drama than comedy. And, not the type of comedy that Fillion did on Castle. The comparisons will be drawn.
The teaser doesn't tell us much, but it has that over earnest vibe. I'll give the Rookie a look and see how it goes.

ABC have "gifted" NF the so called Tuesday 10pm Death Slot where he will be up against NBC's new "New Amsterdam", and probably CBS's "NCIS-New Orleans" tvline.com/2018/05/15/abc-fall-lineup-2018-roseanne-the-rookie-schedule/NEW AMSTERDAM STUDIO: Universal TV/Pico Creek Productions TEAM: David Schulner (w, ep), Peter Horton (d, ep), Dr. Eric Manheimer (p) LOGLINE: Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, it follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director, who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital — the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof — and return it to the glory that put it on the map. CAST: Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, Tyler Labine I seem to remember Jocko Sims from Beckett's ill fated time in DC, but those episodes aren't amongst the ones I rewatch regularly.

The whole thing seems off to me, from the premise to the dialog, from the acting to the age references. Why play the old rookie as 40, which isn't considered that old today and Nathan doesn't make convincing in any case? It seems 30+ years too late, more Police Woman than Cagney & Lacy in grittiness and reality. btw it's on Tue nights at 10 pm opposite the new show New Amsterdam. Its trailer looks terrific and its lead-in is This Is Us. Tough row to hoe for Rookie.

Saw the trailer. Not the sort of thing that would make me interested in watching the show.
Fillion is always commenting on how working in the soaps was great training for TV acting and in many ways I'm sure it is. But, for drama soaps were always over the top and unbelievable. For believable high testosterone drama that's real watch either version of True Grit or The Searchers or maybe even She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. I'm sure there is some example in the past 20 years that gets male drama right. The Town comes to mind, The Hurt Locker or Spotlight.
Fillion is a top comic actor. No argument, hands down, any day of the week. He's done very good drama, but almost every bit of it paired with Katic. He needs a strong dramatic actor working with him in a scene to help him to be good at drama. Don't see that in the trailer.
