ABC executives are the real audience that will determine the success or failure of TR. The show has been put in the network’s blackest work week hole, Tuesday at 10. That is the grave yard for scripted shows. All TR has to do is maintain their current ratings and TPTB will be very happy. TR will get 2, maybe 3 seasons. Everyone will make nice money for the gig. TR will not be must see tv or at the top of anyone’s filmography, if the show can maintain those ratings everyone will be happy. If they slip, ABC will cut them loose in a heartbeat. There is another pilot waiting. But, the demand for content on streaming video is going nowhere but up. I think it's THR that reported that there's even room for TR's ratings to drop by 50% and still see life at least through this season if not a season 2. That's how low the bar has been set for ABC in the time slot and in the TV environment of today. Interesting that just two(?) years ago they cancelled Forever with better ratings than TR's premiere.

Did Nathan learn how to kiss yet?? Noooo!!!! His kissing scene is just awful. I guess because there is no chemistry with this actress. Maybe it's time for him to demand an interupts a kissing scenes like he did on Castle.

lol are you serious? Coming up with ridiculous conspiracy theories. Literally anything to put the show down. Why are you even hate-watching the show if you have no interest in it. Literally no one is talking about these things other than you. So you can't even use the word unicorn now. I didn't know it was patented to one person!! Actually I was being a tad facetious in my second paragraph, hence the "queue in the horror film music" remark. Sorry you didn't catch that. But, yes, the word unicorn used by the nutcase with the bat did stand out for me. Blame some Fillionaires for that one. As I posted elsewhere on this forum, I curiosity-watched, which means I was interested. As for no one else talking about these things, I'm always happy to learn I'm independent minded, but in this case several critics did mention some of the things I brought up. Sorry. I don’t understand the unicorn comment?

I don’t understand the unicorn comment? On other forums for Stana some posters come only to bash her and her fans. They constantly refer to her being a unicorn in her fans' eyes. I don't know why or how it originated, but they definitely mean it to be derogatory. It was so out of the blue for the man with the bat in TR premiere to say unicorn, my mind leapt to that reference when I heard it.

However, I think in this particular case, the unicorn referred to by the guy on top of the car was the hint as to the unicorn balloon that was outside the store where his son was locked in the car.

Still with all the balloons shapes there are, my gut tells me they chose a unicorn on purpose. But that's just me. ;):)

It might make it to the end of the season, but it will be a long, boring season. Just my opinion. He is just so stiff, and that running scene (if you want to call it running, more like huffing) was hilarious.

To be perfectly honest, I can't imagine what possessed Nathan to take on this role and this show. Of course, they didn't have a script when he came aboard and he and Hawley apparently pitched it to ABC without one either so that might account for some of the problems with the pilot. Still I can't get past the notion that this is a guy who had knee surgery on at least one knee, perhaps both, in his 20s or 30s and couldn't/wouldn't do a lot of running or his own stunts on Castle when he was significantly younger. Why on earth take a role of a patrol rookie whose job is nothing but running?

Apparently ABC is promoting The Rookie more than any other show, wait for it, on any other network. And, this the second week in a row for such lavish expenditures. It appears that ABC has higher expectations than they do for any other of their shows or any other networks do for any of there shows. Maybe not that high, but you can tell what someone values by where they put their money. ABC has now put lots of money on The Rookie.
I can see where putting lots of promotional dollars in at the beginning of a new show is a good way to gen up interest in the offering. The one thing that lots of promotion for a movie or series or tv show makes me wonder is why do they need to promote this product so much? Word of mouth is much more effective than money for PR.
TPTB on TR are going to have to produce ratings in a big way. Any stumble here will be a long fall. The problem is that this show does not look like it has been built to be a big ratings producer. It's a one actor vehicle. Supporting characters are thinly written and given to work-a-day actors. The showrunners last job was to blow-up Castle.
Very interesting. Work in progress.

Thanks for that link. Those numbers are fascinating. I (naively) didn't realize they could determine when viewers interrupted watching an ad for viewing the Guide and other reasons like that. It really is Big Brother time, except that there are so many Big Brothers. Aside from that, though, the data is interesting. TR may have the most ads and biggest PR budget but it's not retaining interest during its promos as much as the other top shows are according to the Attention Score and particularly the Attention Index. I wonder how long this backing from ABC will last. TR's latest ratings dropped to 0.8 and 4.4 million viewers last night.

i predicted if The Rookie followed The Conners, it would spell trouble for the show. Roseanne viewership dropped 26% if i'm correct, so the shows after it are suffering for it. or, people watched those shows and didn't like them. i think if ABC wants the rookie to do better, they should move it.

Maybe he's afraid FF is fading out. I don't know. I don't get it. The show had 6 episodes 15 years ago, it's not on TV that I know of. With all of these new super heroes coming out, I would put Fillion last, on my way out of the venue and wait in the parking lot to snag a picture with my cell phone.
From what I've seen of the previews, he's Rick Castle in a police uniform.

And the show barely has any humor as it is. Do you think more drama suits him or do you prefer more of a mix-dramedy? I prefer how he was as castle in the earlier seasons. But I also understand the need to not repeat it and try something different. Its odd to see him humorless for 95% of the scenes. Will not deny it as we are all used to seeing him on-screen as well as offscreen differently

I had always read that many of his fans didn't like him as Richard Castle because he wasnt the Captain Mal type character and they thought he could do better. Had always wondered if that so called story had any legs. Personally, I don't think his strength is straight drama. He would need really good writing, which I don't think Hawley is, and top supporting cast to bring out the best in him. I've read good things about the actor who plays the older superior officer and a little about the love interest character. Personally was hoping he'd get into something different than another cop show. Made similar comment about Stana and Absentia. But it is what it is!

This is too good to pass up......Ive just discovered that the ep title for the 3rd ep is.......none other than............
The Good the Bad and the Ugly.................(dont forget that the infamous Castle Baby ep was........The Good the Bad and the Baby...........).
Ive also learnt in last couple days that the ep title for 2nd ep is.........Crash Course.......in which Nolan keeps crashing the car or is an erratic driver.....and a comment Ive seen is its no wonder on Castle that he wasnt allowed to drive......
AND......another comment Ive read is that fillion does plenty of running as Nolan. Plus fillion has said that when they do the running scenes, he has to do 30 takes......
Interesting......As I thought he didnt want/or preferred not to do more than 1 take per scene.....so was his prefering not to/reticence mainly to annoy Stana??
Just a thought.
