Canceling Roseanne increased her stature in the industry esp in the liberal circles of Hollywood. Hope it's not just liberals who are not racists? Heard her hand was forced by the Disney boss? I don't think he was too thrilled with theDisney brand being associated with an actor dressing up as a Nazi and putting gingerbread people into an oven. I think what you are talking about happened years ago and the photos were out there in the internet for ages. Disney was aware of them when they hired her. They made the right dicision to fire here but they (Disney) are not innocent. Channing fires her knowing this would increase her status in Hollywood and it paid off. It was a self-serving reason. She is not some noble warrior here. Nobody is.

Channing jumped to quick to fire Roseanne. The comments she made were bad, but the network jumped on her and never tried to figure out a solution. Instead, to keep her friends working, she had to sign away all the rights to her show, the show she created and made millions for ABC and the stars. To add insult to injury, they kill off her character from a drug overdose. In my opinion, she apologized and perhaps do a PSA during a commercial. I find it hard to call Roseanne a racist when she had many African American, gay, little transgender grandson and an episode about being worried about muslims living near her. That was a great teaching episode. She made a stupid, racist joke and it's ridiculous ABC destroyed her. I'm sure her past mistakes like canceling "Last Man Standing" and the Castle fiasco. As far as The Rookie, as I understand what I'm reading, is even though TR isn't pulling in the great ratings, they really don't have much to replace it EOF, rarely do I disagree with you but on the issue of Roseanne we are at different ends. IMO the right call was made to fire her after, not just one racist transgression. She went too far and she did it more than once. Hate crimes are on the increase and giving a tepid slap on the hand was not the right stand to take. Leaders need to stand up to that kind of hateful behaviour and do so strongly in particular against those with loud SM platforms such as Roseanne. I agree with EOF. Much ado about nothing since it involved Roseanne Barr. Had ABC been so sensitive, they would never had hired her in the first place considering all her "abuses" in the past. Barr is blunt, brusque, and nasty, and often incorrectly presents her view, meaning her "intent" isn't always obvious so people are left with just their "interpretation." This PC world is not for her. Nor is the anti-Trump world. IMO she should never have apologized and certainly never have blamed Ambien or whatever drug she said she was on. She should have taken ownership of what she said and rolled with the punches. Hate crimes are not on the increase because people like Roseanne write a political tweet. They are increasing throughout the world because of the increasing insistence by the Left to categorize people by groups, races, ethnicities, religions, in short, tribes, aka Identity Politics. Get rid of that, treat people as individuals, and hate crimes will go down.

Sorry, but you hope it's not just liberals who are not racists? That's some branding on your part, but it's too political to discuss here. I will just note that Roseanne did that stupid Nazi thing a decade ago. If Disney/ABC were so righteous, they wouldn't have rehired her for the reboot in the first place.

But your insistence on blaming 'the Left' for the world's wows actually is breathtaking. Perhaps reflect on how so called 'identity politics' starts with your own President calling Nazi's 'good people. If it's PC to remove a xenophobic and racist person from the payroll of the ABC, then I'm all for it. Oh, and by the way, hate crimes ARE on the increase and an American needs to look in their own back yard to recognise that fact. People like Roseanne and Trump use their SM bullhorns to throw red meat to those who thrive on hate. You know, the kind of people who make pipe bombs and send them to those who criticise dear leader. It's not as simple as 'treating people as individuals' but rather treating them with humanity and respect. Not commenting on this further here but bravo to the ABC for firing a racist and xenophobic employee.

Why is it that when someone actually makes a management decision to fire a xenophobic and racist employee who is bringing major negative publicity to the company somehow equated to being self serving? It was the correct decision in the bigger picture regardless of the age of the offending comments and pics. Some things simply cannot be justified by the passing of time and Roseanne has a knack of continually being offensive.

But why was she hired when Disney knew she did the Nazi thing. The photos were out there on the internet for ages. As far as Channing is concerned, It is said she wanted to leave ABC and join Shonda and Netflix for a while now. And by firing Roseanne she managed to impress Hollywood as the show was highest-rated at the time.

Not commenting on this further here but bravo to the ABC for firing a racist and xenophobic employee. Latte, you do this often. You bring up politics first or at least make a political reference like the quote about "can liberals be the only non-racists?" knowing full well that there are Conservative- and Libertarian-leaning people on this forum. Then you toss around some words like racist and xenophobic and finally say you will no longer engage in the discussion. I took your comment as an insult, a very common one that many of those claiming to be liberal trot out whenever people differ from them in their views about such issues as affirmative action, minority and diversity quotas, and so on. The history of people identifying with groups goes back a long way, all the way back to the cave men, no doubt. Long before they ever met a white person, the American Native tribe, the Nez Perce, called themselves the Nimipu, meaning The People. Everyone else was Other, no matter whether another Native tribe, Europeans or white Americans. But "identity politics" in its current meaning started in the late 1960s in the US with two basic movements, gay pride and the radicalized fringe of the Civil Rights Movement, both definitely part of the Left in this country. It was quickly picked up by Democratic politicians as a way to expand their base that was ripped apart by Lyndon Johnson and the Vietnam War. It certainly did not begin with Trump, although by the time he came onto the political scene, identity politics was being used by both parties, although the Dems were far more accomplished at it and are far more subtle, but equally dangerous, as Trump's and, yes, Roseanne Barr's crude comments. Wiki is a good place to start to get some of the history on identity politics, but if you're at all interested in actual knowledge I suggest JFK advisor and historian Arthur Schlesinger's The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society.
Oh, and by the way, I did not deny hate crimes were rising*, I simply said they were around the world, implying not just in America. But you twisted that too as well as misinterpreted my remark about treating people as individuals in such a way that I wouldn't have meant with respect and humanity. In my philosophy, that's a given until an individual proves they don't deserve it. *According to statistical data, hate crimes are increasing in the past few years. Unfortunately, like sexual abuse and harassment, there is no clear-cut definition of hate crime. As such, it is impossible to determine whether the abuses being claimed are equivalent to those claimed in previous years. That is, is the definition getting broader or people getting more sensitive or both or neither? Is the data from year to year comparing apples to apples or apples to oranges? In a society where college students can ban speakers because they disagree with them or get professors censured or fellow students expelled for alleged misdeeds without due process, any data relying on undefined words are suspect.

Good news for The Rookie with a small tick up in ratings this week-enjoying a lift most shows received. Time Show Adults 18-49 rating/share Viewers (millions) 10 p.m. New Amsterdam (NBC) 1.1/5 6.29 The Rookie (ABC) 0.8/3 4.34 FBI (CBS) – R 0.6/3 4.73
"On ABC, “The Conners” (1.4) and “The Kids Are Alright” (0.9) similarly matched their series lows from last week. “Black-ish” (0.9), “Splitting Up Together” (0.7), and “The Rookie” (0.8), however, all ticked up a tenth week-to-week. After taking a week off too, “Lethal Weapon” returned up from its previous 0.6 to a 0.7, while “The Gifted” (0.6) stayed even."

Not unusual for viewership to increase the week after Thanksgiving in the US, especially when Turkey Day was early as it was this year. It's a bit of a breather week for Americans before people get really serious about hitting the malls for Christmas shopping. Also CBS aired a repeat of FBI, not a new ep of NCIS, so that may have helped as well. Last night was the fall finale of New Amsterdam. If TR continues to air new eps for a couple of weeks, it may continue to get an additional boost.

Wednesdays ep ie 5th December, is US winter finale, so the ratings will indeed be very interesting, also factoring that there are about 15 more eps to screen.....since the ep count went from 13 to 20.......

Tonight's ep is the 7th, so 13 more. I thought they'd go one more week to try to capture some of the New Amsterdam and NCIS audience while those shows were on hiatus.

Looks like the rating, share and audience for TR are low,but stable. The are not in the renewal range, but for the moment not in the cancellation range. Still TR is in trouble. TPTB will get to them soon if they haven’t done something already. Winter hiatus may be the breaking point.
I can’t see ABC letting this dog go on much longer even in this time slot. It harms the network ‘s image.

All successful actors, writers, producers, etc. have a bunch of dogs. Just look up Brad Pitt on IMDb. You can buy a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Ask Donald Trump.
Fillion made big money on Castle which is light years ahead of 99.99999% of all working actors. He’s fine.

tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/daily-ratings/tv-ratings-tuesday-dec-11-2018/ I thought it was the very best episode of the series, by far. I stopped watching after three eps and a bit of the fourth. At the time I thought some major changes would have to be made to make the stories and characters more engaging. I felt it was very shallow and superficial (separate and aside from anything to do with what I think of Nathan). I'm curious as to whether you think the show is coming to terms with some of those issues (the fractured nature of stories about patrol work and introducing so many characters at once) and what it was about this ep that makes you think it's the best so far. I'd be interested in knowing if they can turn the show around, even though it may be too late to capture a sizeable audience. Thanks in advance.
